The Old Gym is one of the best places to stay in the town of Wanaka in the South Island of New Zealand. We used to be the town gym but we converted the building to a regular house tenanted by people staying in Wanaka for 3 months or longer. House-mates can use all the facilities of our private gym and rock climbing room while staying in a basic but cozy local-style house.
We have double rooms, and single rooms, and we can find you someone to share a room with to make it cheaper if you want to do that. We have shared kitchen facilities, comfy lounge, and TV/video room. In winter we also have a fabulous Japanese spa bath on 24 hours a day, a drying room for wet ski gear and a tuning room for skis and snowboards.
Our house:
Our house is very social, but not a party house. We usually have a lot of different nationalities in the house so it is a lot of fun.
The common areas of the house are kept clean by our wonderful caretakers, so no fights about the dishes and the state of the loos. Everything is included in our house so no fights about bills either.
Kitchen: You get your own space in the fridge and your own space in cupboards too. We usually eat all together on Sunday nights and one nationality cooks (bring some recipes!).
Lounge: We have a lounge and separate TV room. In winter our lounge has a Japanese kotatsu table (a quilted table with a heater underneath) to keep us cosy.
TV Room:
We have a TV, DVD and video player (and video collection). If you want SKY premium channels you can let the caretaker know and pay for it.
Laundry:
We have a basic washing machine and a coin dryer.
Internet:
We have wireless broadband throughout the whole house.
Rock Climbing Room:
7 meters by 5 meters of rock climbing on all four walls and ceiling.
Gym:
The Old Gym still has all the commercial gym equipment from the time that it was Wanaka’s one and only gym. Aerobic equipment includes a Concept II Erg, basic stepper, and slide board.
(Winter only) Drying Room:
Our small but efficient drying room gets your boots and gear dry overnight.
(Winter only) Ski Room and Tuning Room:
Our ski room is set up for you to store your skis and to tune them. We have a basic tuning bench with snowboard vices (skiers might need to bring their own) and an iron for waxing.
